Since January, the City Speech & Debate team has been hard at work hosting two tournaments and preparing for the remainder of the debate tournament schedule.

We are very grateful to all those schools who attended the 2012 City Classic Debates, and with the positive comments we received look forward to hosting an even bigger tournament next year.

On to the results.

City’s varsity policy team took home a victory at the Kanellis Overnighter in early January, with our policy and LD novices also outperforming the field.  Great job Kieran and Ava!

In early February, City High hosted the East Iowa NFL District tournament.  Our varsity LD and Policy teams narrowly missed National Forensic League tournament bids in February, and our novices took top prizes at the Columbus Community Groundhog Day tournament/

We cleared a novice team to octas at Homewood, and survived open division debate at the IFL All State tournament in both policy (4-2 again!) and LD (an amazing 0-5 record, but 4th speaker performance, take that tab room!).

Rounding out the year was the Great Midwestern Novice and JV Championships, where City teams scored 4-2 prelim records yet did not break in either JV Policy or Novice LD.  It’s always unfortunate to earn a winning record and not advance, because the kids all worked so hard for their wins, but like much in life, it’s part of the experience.  (Keep doing your speaking drills to improve your points!!)

Our team pivots now to April and May.  We begin practice at South East Junior High this week, and the Dowling Junior High Speech & Debate Paradigm takes place on May 12th.  We’re looking forward to that.

During the summer, our entire team will attend debate camp.  (Thank you parents and hard-working students for making this happen.)  This year, we have debaters at NSD camp for LD, Spartan-Hoya seven week, and Michigan seven week, and all will come back very well prepared for next season.

The Little Hawks did a GREAT JOB at West High’s Kanellis Overnighter. In Novice Policy, Connor and Elias were 2-3 and Drew and Seif were 1-4. Kieran and Ava, as well as the maverick Henry were 3-1 in regular rounds. Henry was 3rd speaker. Kieran and Ava broke to finals where they won. In Lincoln-Douglas, Shecharya went an impressive 5-0 then won both his out rounds. He was also 3rd speaker. Congratulations, Little Hawks!
